Adventures in Cooking

On today's menu:
Banana Nut Bread

Begin by noticing the five bananas on your kitchen counter that are now spotted like a dalmation and debate over whether you should throw them out or make something from them. Notice your baby entertaining himself by sucking on his toes and decide to make banana nut bread.
Note to self: Check to see if you can still get your toes anywhere near your head.
Then mash 4 or the 5 bananas in a mixing bowl. The recipe says to blend the bejesus out of them in a mixer with 1 and 1/4 cup of sugar but you don't want to clean all that up sp you use a fork to squish the bananas and then mix in the sugar. It's lumpy but that does not worry you.
Then you read the directions and begin to wonder if you have all the ingredients for this recipe.
Note to Self: read all recipes through before making a mess!
You also notice that the 2 eggs should be room temperature but they are still in the fridge. You get them out and put them in your pockets to warm them. Then you melt the stick of butter and let it sit on the cabinet to cool. Too bad you can't just drop the eggs into the warm butter... but that's probably a bad idea.
Note to self: do not lean up against the cabinets.
Then you add a dollop (it says 1 tsp, but who wants to hunt down a measuring spoon?) of vanilla flavoring and some salt (that's probably a 1/2 of a tsp). Then you come to the nuts. The recipe says to use walnuts but all you have is pecans and they're whole, not crushed. You bang the bag on the counter to crush them, which works great until you bust a hole int he bag and about 1/3 of them fall on the floor. You sweep this up and decide to crush them with your fingers instead.
Note to Self: use a sealable bag when punding nuts.
The last ingerdient is baking soda but you can't find any except for the kind that comes in the special refridgerator packaging. You open the top and take out a little (that looks like it's about 1 and 1/2 of a tsp) to add to the mix.
Note to Self: Tape box top back later so it can be put into the fridge.
Then you take the eggs out of your pockets and crack them into the bowl and pour the warm butter in. You mix well. Fortunately, you remembered to preheat the oven to 350 degrees and so you grease your loaf pan, pour in the mix and pop it in. An hour and 9 minutes later you take out the best Banana Bread you've ever made!
Okay- it's the ONLY banana bread you've ever made, but it's pretty stinking good!

And just like that...

As we were waiting for Josh to ge this hair cut today I was letting Jonah stand on my lap and take in the sights at the beauty salon, and chew on my fingers. But I noticed something new- it hurt. My sweet little baby has a little tooth pushing through.

I guess it shouldn't surprise me since he will be 6 months old on Sunday, and we've been giving him rice cereal regularly for almost a month now. Also he's been drooling like crazy for about as long.

But yesterday there wasn't a tooth and he wasn't cranky at all yesterday or last night. There was no warning at all.

In about three seconds all the peanut butter sandwiches and cookies and chicken fingers I'll soon be feeding him made my heart do a flip. A tooth.

A TOOTH!

It's not that I don't want him to get bigger and walk and talk and learn to drive...
Okay, I don't want him to learn to do those things. I like that he's dependent on me. I like that he gets excited when he wakes up from a nap and I am there or when I feed him cereal and he squeals for more. I like the quiet times when I am feeding him and he looks up at me and grins. Getting bigger means he won't do that anymore.

Of course it does mean being able to leave him with a babysitter more easily and not bouncing him all the way through church and maybe even making it through a movie. Maybe it's not all so bad?

Sorry- no picture. It's still too small.

April Fools!

Yes- You think that because I'm posting now that I might actually be more consistent in posting in the future. But I won't.

Jonah is doing well- eating rice cereal like a champ and making friends with other 5-month-old children at church. He likes to jump and has started laughing. He finds it especially funny when you follow him up or down the stairs. What can I say? He's a genius!

Josh and I still own a house in Nashville. I'm thinking of it as our summer home. We may be in Nashville for a while this summer while Josh is teaching an online summer course. If the house doesn't sell.

Seems like that my whole life is contingent on our house and it's sale status.

Josh may have convinced me to build a house out of shipping containers. If our house sells.

Oh yes- and I cut my hair. I hadn't really told anyone (like my Mom- hi Mom!) I just decided to do it last Saturday. The Asian woman who cut it got it straight and did it the way I asked. No more crazy haircuts.

It's warming up here in OKC and you know what that means... Tornadoes! We had one come about 5 to 10 miles from here the other night. The roads flooded and it rained a lot. I'm really just looking forward to wearing shorts and taking Jonah to the park.

Well, that's all for now. I promise to post again before Jonah's 1st birthday.
