hmmmm...

Not particularly flattering.

So they name a star after you- and then they just happen to mention that it's not particularly bright... what does this mean?

This one says that it might be the most likely place for alien life. Hmmm.

Baby Names

This is for Laura and John- and whoever else i was telling about this the other day.

Surprise- my name isn't in there. :(

Also, just FYI you can check out the top 100 baby names from 2005.

And for those of you whose baby names seem to be all in the top 10- check out some names that might be unique.

And for those of you (like me) who aren't pregnant (stop asking!) and like to laugh about the "unique names being dispensed in the last 15 years: check this out.

In the garden

It's been a while since i last posted, so I am including a lot of pictures. I figured that might help you forgive me for having been boring for a while. The last two weeks have been pretty busy. I took a class and had to teach Kindergarten. I did a lot more teaching than expected because the teacher was in and out a lot. On friday her mother fell and broke her hip as the day was beginning, so the assistant and some other woman (who was out more than in) and I taught class. Very interesting experience. Above is the Monkey Hat match game. the kids were supposed to match the monkey with the color word to the hat of the correct color. It was fun to make. I like the dancing monkeys.

This is my Portacula- I am growing it in a box on my porch. i just love the colors- all the corals and pinks! It has rained like crazy here for hte last two weeks and they are getting lots and lots of water so the blooms just keep on coming.

This is Josh in the garden. We have a small backyard, but he managed to plow up a pretty good chunk of it. He is adding yarn to the bean poles so the peas and pole beans can climb up it. Josh hung up pie pans to keep the birds away, but they don't seem to be working. He ad to yell out the window at a bird in the garden this morning- I don't think it did any good. I don't think anything is actually eating our plants, though. My Mom's garden seems to be subject to some bunnies lately. They've been eating the leaves right off her plants.
This is a view of Josh from behind the pea plants. I think it is a neat picture, so i put it on here. Occasionally my $15 wal-mart digital keychain camera does take interesting pictures!

This is our lettuce- it's coming up quick and I am looking forward to some salad this summer!

And these are the carrots. We tried carrots last year and we got lots of green leaves and not enough root to even make the carrot. The roots were a little orange-ish, though. I guess that's something. I am hoping for a better turn out this year. Josh doesn't like carrots (though he might eat them on principal if he is th eone who actually grew them... hmmm) so I will probably be eating whatever comes out.

Well, I hope this was at least somewhat interesting- i love watching the seeds sprout and grow. Especially the peas! I'm excited that the peas will be here soon. They are always very expensive in the grocery store, so I don't buy them. Besides, they are best when they are still warm from the sun, seconds off the vine! MMMMM!

Bodies, Babies and Bugs

I worked in my Mom's backyard putting in a garden last Saturday. It was nice and I wasn't as sore as I thought I would be. I am trying to excercize a little more every day- loving movements as the Flylady calls them. You should check her out.

This weekend it seemed like everyone I talked to (people I have known a while and not seen, or people I see regularly) is now pregnant. It's a little (please forgive me if you are pregnant) annoying. People ask me all the time when we're going to start having babies (or worse yet- are you pregnant?) and I never quite know what to say. Mostly because I'm not pregnant and I don't have plans to be anytime soon.

My whole family is getting sick and I don't really feel all that good today. I am afraid to eat lunch. If I start puking I will still havet o go to school the rest of the week (as long as I can get out of bed!) because I'm taking this class and I am halfway done with it.

Monkey Business

So- Nothing has gotten done lately because I am taking a class. YES! I have started taking classes to get my teacher's lisence. I am currently working onthe last hour of work for a class I took as an undergrad, that did not have the practicum time it needed to have. Also, this is a short course, so i am scrambling to get it all together. I am a little nervous because my family has been passing around a virus and last night after dinner my Dad started displaying some pretty obvious symptoms (as we could all hear from the living room). If I get sick, I will have to drop the class.

So I'm not getting sick. I'm not.

Right now I am cutting out Monkey heads for a learning center to go with the book "Caps for Sale." I personally never really understood the draw of this story. However, it is easy to tell and there are TONS of activities to go with it.

FYI- I just got back from teaching my first class- piece of cake! The kids are wild, but they can really be good if you give them the opportunity! Interesting sub in the classroom today. I hated to leave- I was afraid they would give her a stroke!

I'm interviewing anyone who reads this!

I'm answering these first, but I would also like to have anyone who reads this to also answer these questions- just leave a comment!

1. If you could travel back in time, what would you tell yourself 10 years ago?

Don't go out with Bob! In fact, don't date anyone at all! You think you know yourself really well, but ten years from now you will still be learning things about yourself that you never even imagined. Don't worry about what other people think of you. You are cool enough to wear lots of color and cute strange clothes. And for heaven's sake, excercize! You may not even weigh enough to give blood right now, but your metabolism won't be like this forever. You are beautiful and special, and you are talented, but if you don't excercize the talent, and you don't believe and act like you are beautiful and special then you will stop believing it.

Most of all: Make God your first priority. All that other stuff will follow if you can get that one straight!

2. Who is your favorite artist?

This one is hard. I like Renior's portraits but I also like Klimt and (of course) Wilson.

3. What is your most prized material possession and what does it mean to you? (not people, pets or qualities.)

Without a doubt it is the journal I kept through my last two years of high school and my first year of college. Its mostly cheesy or whiney, but it reminds me a lot of how far I have come and where I have wanted to go- and where I want to go now.

4. How do you like your eggs?

Sunny side up and runny with toast.

5. What do you secretly hoard?

Books- I guess this isn't much of a secret for anyone who helped us move- I will probably not ever read them again, but I would miss them if they weren't around. Also, old copies of Real Simple Magazine, and neat pics and illustrations from the internet.

Mad Scramble

Have you ever tried to stand on a teeter totter? If you stand in the middle it will balance itself out, but if you inch out of the middle you will probbaly fall off, much less create unbalance. In real life, though, there are other people and things on the teeter-totter that are constantly shifting and changing. It's hard to maintain you balance with the other things contantly shifting- unless you are perfectly aligned to the middle of the tetter-totter.

This is the metaphor that I have been trying to reconcile my life to all year. It seems that every tme I try to compensate for the shifting of the things around me, I am drawn further away from that center that keeps my from falling and knocking my own teeth out. Lovely image...

So I have made a descision about the destination I am trying to reach. I am focusing on that destination so I don't get myself seasick from the constant movement all around me, and I am trying not to allow myself to be drawn out of that center.

I haven't posted in a few days because my focus drew me away. I have been working for 7 or 8 hours a day and doing a practicum in a Kindergarten class for four hours in the mornings. All of this without consulting my boss first. I talked to her today and she is okay with the arrangement, but to be honest I am not very concerned with her opinion. I was going to take the time one way or another. My Job seems to be the one thing that is distracting me from the center more than any other thing.

So what is the center? Everyone's life has a center- like a sweet spot in a concert hall, you have to stand in just the right place to hear and feel it. It's a quiet place where, if you could, you would be able to rest and focus and make objective descisions and observations because truth is magnified, recognized and cherished there. The Hairiness of life makes that a very small place.

Gods is a part of it. To truly hear his desire for you- and to be able to recognize the intentions behind those desires can only come when we reach the center.

Listening to your instinct is another part of it. This is something that i think we often do not validate enough. When we know truth- even inarticulate truth- and ignore it, we reject a part of ourselves.

Contentment is another part of it. Recognizing that you are someplace in life, and that place is good enough for the moment.

I don't know what else- They are the things that draw us to the center, but they are hard to express.

Creative Prompt

Number 5

Choose a poem you like. Take the last line and use that as the 1st line of a poem or short story.
Hopefully the product will be up this afternoon.

Just remember:

Most people, when they criticize, whether they like it or hate it, they're talking about product. That's not art, that's the result of art. Art, to whatever degree we can get a handle on (I'm not sure that we really can) is a process. It begins in the heart and the mind with the eyes and hands.

~Jeff Melvoin, Northern Exposure, Fish Story, 1994

Okay, this one turned out to be harder than I thought. Good last lines, but no good ideas. So anyone else try this and come out with something that even makes sense? Please post it- cause I'm curious! I'm going to keep trying, but no promises.

Hall of Flames!

"I know Everything! Mwa-ha-ha-ha!"

"Now how do you think that looks?"
"Responsible" Me

These are only two- I could have added the others if I could have gotten halfway decent photos of the page. I really need to buy a scanner!
